Speech Title:

Exploring the Rationale Why China Can Successfully Resolve the Social Problems Such As Covid-19 and Poverty.

Abstract:

The sudden outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic has caused great trouble to all countries in the world. China has adopted most active strategies against the Covid-19 and has made remarkable achievements in the control of the Covid-19 mortalities and infections, and in the economic recovery and growth. Ending poverty is listed as the first goal of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by the United Nations, and China had 55.75 million people living below the poverty line in 2015. Mobilizing various societal resources to conduct precise and targeted poverty alleviation activities, China has succeeded in lifting these people out of poverty in 2020. These facts motivate us to explore the rationale why China can successfully resolve these difficult social problems. I will report in the following three aspects:

1) A stylized model is proposed to explain the relationship between the performance of solving social problems, such as Covid-19 and poverty, and a country's cultural and political characteristics.

2) As the application of the model, we compare the poverty eradication process in China and the US, and compare the response strategies fighting the Covid-19 pandemic in China, the UK and Spain.

3) We collect country level data to examine the impacts of culture, government efficiency, social trust, GHSI and GDP on the Covid-19 mortality, and the role of government efficiency, social trust, and GDP in fighting poverty. All results obtained are consistent with our model predictions. Interestingly, some results are different from the common stereotypes.
